Rialto & Cisco AXP
Medical providers seeking to improve the quality and productivity of patient care face tremendous challenges: is it possible to join existing IT solutions and legacy clinical systems, to build information highways that not only cross health jurisdictions, but also meet strict security and privacy requirements?
Yes, it is possible. Karos and Cisco® have joined technology and expertise to meet these challenges and alleviate the difficult tasks of complex interoperability configuration, deployment, and monitoring. Karos’ Rialto platform is now available to run on Cisco’s advanced network routers, creating an innovative delivery model for clinical information exchange, connecting multiple data centres, linking disparate applications, and unifying legacy information systems.
Benefits
Cisco’s advanced router technology combines multiple infrastructure services into a single appliance (network services, security, audio/video, voice, messaging, etc.) and can integrate advanced applications such as Rialto. The simplicity of Cisco’s “network as a platform” architecture bundled with Rialto creates a secure and resilient platform for clinical information exchange. The Rialto exchange platform can be deployed as a distributed set of appliances yet be configured and monitored from a single location.
By embedding Rialto into Cisco’s routers, the network becomes the healthcare platform for collaboration, decreasing maintenance costs and risks, and greatly simplifying the life of healthcare IT managers.
The solution provides a scalable platform for the exchange of clinical information for small healthcare providers and large healthcare institutions alike. The appliance delivery model supports gradual expansion, ensuring the steady growth of additional clinical information exchanges. A deployment might start with a small number of hospitals and then add a referral base and ancillary services. Eventually, the deployment can expand to an entire health region, and potentially to a national grid of connected health providers and patients.
Features
The solution is comprised of the Rialto platform and empowers Cisco’s advanced Integrated Services Routers (ISR) to run clinical information exchange software. The ISR’s Application eXtension Platform (AXP) provides an application services hosting platform inside of the router, allowing applications and solution to be embedded into the network.
The AXP provides a standards-based Linux environment within the ISR. Once integrated into an ISR, Rialto appears as an extension of the router, providing complete flexibility of configuration.
By pushing the intelligence of the Rialto clinical exchange and storage solution into the network, deployment and monitoring activities are greatly simplified. Rialto interacts directly with common network services such as authentication, security, and information routing, making the solution more secure, while also increasing its performance.
